First China-Vietnam Medical-Themed Heartwarming Mini Series Wo Zai Guo Men Jiu Si Fu Shang (Saving Lives at the Border) Begins Filming in Dongxing
On December 3, the launch ceremony for the “ASEAN Trilogy” mini series and the production kick-off for its China-Vietnam chapter, Wo Zai Guo Men Jiu Si Fu Shang (Saving Lives at the Border), were successfully held at the Border Mini Series Incubation Base in Dongxing, Fangchenggang, Guangxi. Planned by Guangxi Daily Media Group and Guangxi Cloud Digital Media Group, the trilogy project coincides with the 75th anniversary of China's diplomatic relations with Vietnam and Indonesia, and the 50th anniversary with Thailand in 2025. Centered on the concept of "culture + tourism + youth," it focuses on stories of young people from the three countries, adopting a light, youthful, and internationally appealing format to showcase the friendship and exchanges between China and ASEAN countries.
All three productions of the series have successfully passed the National Radio and Television Administration's key online drama filing review, making them Guangxi's first internationally oriented mini series projects to receive such recognition. The China-Vietnam installment features Vietnamese actors and will be jointly distributed with Hanoi Radio and Television Station in Vietnam. Filming will take place at locations including China's Dongxing Port and Vietnam's Mong Cai City, with a planned release on Chinese and international platforms in January 2026. The China-Thailand and China-Indonesia chapters are also scheduled for production and release in 2026, leveraging the "mini series + cultural tourism" model to foster international people-to-people exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations.

Nearly 4,000 Mini Series Produced in Shaanxi from January to October, Xi'an's Production Strength Ranking Among the Top in China
On December 3, the Information Office of the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government held a press conference to introduce the achievements of Shaanxi's cultural development during the 14th Five-Year Plan period. From January to October this year, Shaanxi produced nearly 4,000 mini series, already surpassing the total output of 2024. Xi'an's mini series production now ranks among the top in the country.
Shaanxi is working to build Xi'an as a "Mini Series Capital", implementing a "classified and layered review" system, establishing the National Mini Series Research and Evaluation Center, and releasing the first authoritative evaluation index, the "Fanxing Index." In the first half of this year, Shaanxi's total mini series popularity index reached approximately 1.985 billion, accounting for 29% of the national Top 100 production companies' total popularity. High-quality works such as Huo Yan Ju (The Flame Colt) and Shan He Hui Xiang (Echoes of the Mountains and Rivers) appear frequently, with more than 50 titles recommended by the National Radio and Television Administration and 14 included in the "Mini Series+" recommendation list.
In addition, Shaanxi's mini series industry ecosystem continues to strengthen. The province is home to over 2,100 film and TV production companies, with over 500 newly added in the past three years. Among the national Top 100 production companies, 26 are from Shaanxi, including 4 in the Top 10. Shaanxi has built a comprehensive industry chain, with multiple filming and AI production bases, creating over 40,000 jobs. Moving forward, Shaanxi aims to guide the mini series industry toward a "value-led" transformation, develop a talent pool to address talent shortages, and improve its governance system to ensure standardized and healthy development.
Problems in the Mini Series Market Need Solutions; Joint Efforts Are Required to Build a Healthy Industry Ecosystem
On December 1, Zhejiang Huace Film & TV Co., Ltd. (hereinafter "Huace Film & TV") issued a statement condemning several mini series that copied the promotional videos and core plot of its major long-form drama Jia Ye (Family Business). The company emphasized that such actions violate the principles of originality and industry ethics.
Despite the rapid growth of the mini series industry, a few issues are still emerging. In addition to the recent "copycat filming" dispute faced by Huace Film & TV, issues such as repetitive themes, vulgar content, plagiarized plots, rampant piracy, and misleading consumption practices remain widespread.
The root causes of these challenges are multifaceted. From the creative perspective, many companies are eager to quickly capture market share, often sacrificing content quality in the process. They may resort to vulgar or sensational elements to attract attention or recycle plots and settings from successful works to save time and production costs. On the audience side, some viewers prioritize entertainment over overall quality, creating room for low-quality mini series to thrive. To address these issues, major platforms have started intensifying efforts to crack down on illegal mini series and work to build a safer, healthier, and more sustainable environment. At the policy level, since 2022, China has issued several documents, including the Notice on Strengthening the Management of Online Mini Series and Implementing the Creative Improvement Plan, providing valuable guidance and references for the industry's development.
